Ashanti Design in the South African bush
Deep in the bush at Morukuru Family Madikwe, you’ll find Morukuru Owner’s House and River House, two private homes designed around family, connection and spending time together in the landscape.
After heavy floods, both houses needed to be reworked and refreshed. What could have simply been a setback instead became an opportunity to give the spaces a new chapter.
The interiors were redesigned by Hinterland Studio and we were very happy to see Ashanti Design lighting become part of that story.

Lighting the houses
Rather than one Ashanti design repeated throughout, our lampshades appear across the interiors in different ways, working with the character and palette of each space.
That’s one of our favourite things about seeing our pieces once they leave the workshop. A lampshade begins here in Cape Town as a frame, a colour palette and a weave, but it really comes into its own once it finds its place within a finished interior.
At Morukuru, the woven textures sit naturally amongst the colours and materials of the houses and against the incredible landscape just beyond them.

A project close to home
Morukuru was named one of Condé Nast Traveller Top 15 Resorts in the 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards, but what we particularly love about the project is its focus on bringing people together.
As a family run business ourselves, there’s something meaningful about contributing to spaces built around connection, time together and a slower way of living.
Our lights travel all over the world, which is something we’ll never stop getting excited about, but it’s equally special seeing them find a home right here in South Africa.

A big thank you to Morukuru Family Madikwe and Hinterland Studio for including Ashanti Design in such a beautiful project.
