Our Materials & Weaving Techniques
All the materials used to create the Ashanti Design lighting range are completely sustainable. The thread used to weave our array of shades is reclaimed dead stock from the manufacturing industry in South Africa, broken down into its simplest form and given a new lease on life in the hands of our weavers.
The basket lampshade range is crafted using raffia, invasive water reeds and palm – all fast-growing and in abundance in the country in which they’re woven, Malawi.
All of these materials provide flexibility, integrity, beauty and longevity without compromising on sustainable impact.
The Original Weave
Originating as far back as our Neolithic ancestors, the classic under-over weave produces a unified and strong aesthetic form.
Simple Wrap
While it may not strictly be ‘weaving’, our wrapping technique allows us to integrate a variety of different colourways in a structured and flexible way.
The Diamon Weave (Tildi)
A stunning technique which creates beautiful three-dimensional texture and patterning.
