Imagine stepping into a space that feels like it has grown right out of the forest. The Zulu-zen-inspired Phinda Forest Lodge blends in effortlessly with the natural beauty that surrounds it, focusing not just on luxury, but foremost respecting the environment it's nestled in.

Being one of the world’s first eco-designed luxury safari lodges, nestled inside Africa’s last remaining dry sand forest, we had the privilege to collaborate with Foxbrown Creative on custom lighting for the space.
Drawing inspiration from the intricate weave of classic Zulu baskets, we embarked on a journey to reinvent our well-known Etosha lampshade. We meticulously translated the intricate basket weave designs onto custom-made frames, ensuring each shade boasts its unique symmetrical pattern. These larger-than-life ceiling shades marry traditional patterns with modern design sensibilities, resulting in a stunning addition to both the wine cellar and the live cooking station.

But beauty isn't the only thing these lampshades offer. Recognising the outdoor setting of Phinda Forest Lodge, we chose to weave the shades using polypropylene rope instead of cotton. This material not only lends durability but ensures UV and mould resistance, making them ideal for many environments.
Available in three sizes - 1500mm, 1200mm, and 1000mm in diameter - they can be mounted from the top, emitting a captivating ambient glow along the ceiling. These multifaceted pieces can also be hung as pendant lights using a standard lamp holder, double as wall panels or clustered together as an art installation, offering endless possibilities for creative expression.
A labor of love, it took our entire team of weavers to bring these extra-large shades to life. Each one, with its carefully chosen color palette of four hues, stands out individually while still belonging to the same cohesive design family. And the effort was worth it. The moment the shades found their new home, it was nothing short of mesmerising—a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of our little lampshade family.
